Fault Code: 4167
PID:
SPN: 5745
FMI: 2/2
LAMP: Amber

The aftertreatment diesel exhaust fluid dosing unit heater temperature is irrational.

Diesel exhaust fluid injection into the SCR aftertreatment system is disabled.

Circuit Description

The aftertreatment DEF dosing unit reports its internal temperature to the DEF controller via the dosing unit SIGNAL wire. The DEF controller communicates this information to the primary engine control module (ECM) via the J1939 data link network.

Component Location

The aftertreatment diesel exhaust fluid dosing unit location is original equipment manufacturer (OEM) dependent. Refer to the OEM service manual.

Conditions for Running the Diagnostics

This diagnostic runs immediately after the keyswitch is turned to the ON position, and continues until the diesel exhaust fluid dosing unit attempts to prime.

Conditions for Setting the Fault Codes

An internal error was detected in the aftertreatment diesel exhaust fluid controller, and has been communicated to the Engine Control Module (ECM) via the J1939 data link.

Action Taken When the Fault Code is Active

  • The ECM illuminates the amber CHECK ENGINE lamp and/or the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) immediately when the diagnostic runs and fails.
  • Diesel exhaust fluid injection into the aftertreatment system is disabled.

Engine torque will be reduced if the engine is operated for an extended period of time with this fault active.

Conditions for Clearing the Fault Code

  • It is necessary to use the «Reset All Faults» command in the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent to clear this fault and extinguish the amber CHECK ENGINE lamp and/or Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).
  • Start the engine and let it idle. If, after the engine idles for 10 minutes, the fault code is still not active, the repair has been validated.
